I am pleased to welcome you to our CAPM family – The Canadian Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine.
We are a national association with members from across the country who focus part of their practice in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. Our members practice in settings from community to academic practice and across the lifespan. We have an increasing number of members in training which is wonderful, because our national family of members has a strong tradition of mentorship and we want to continue to develop this.
Through our relationship with the Canadian Psychiatric Association, we bring our voice to national advocacy efforts in mental health. We support the ongoing Continuing Professional Development of our members in our annual CAPM meeting, a highly reviewed, growing program which is conveniently, the day before the CPA meeting. This meeting has become a key opportunity for building and sustaining longstanding relationships with our colleagues throughout the year. We have strong links with the American Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and the European Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine.
We are committed to raising the profile of our discipline with the goal of improving the care of patients with comorbid mental and physical illness, from the patient to system level. As one key example, CAPM and many of its members were instrumental in our effort to increase recognition of our expertise through an application for the Area of Focused Competence (AFC) from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In May 2020, we received approval of our discipline. While there is much work to be done, this recognizes our distinct expertise and will be the basis of formal training programs and the additional recognition as Diplomates in this the C-L Psychiatry AFC. This is very exciting and CAPM will continue to play a key role in this initiative and as a home for those of us in C-L Psychiatry from all over Canada.
We welcome members to join in our governance and in identifying new initiatives that will help improve. There has never been a more exciting time to be in C-L Psychiatry!
